Abstract
This thesis describes the practice of guanxi values in overseas Tionghoa: a study of the existence of Tionghoa culture in Padang. The basic assumption is that the practice of guanxi values in Tiongkok is carried out in an economic system to achieve optimal results. Guanxi which is a set of values possessed by overseas Tionghoa in Padang, which are practiced in social, cultural, and religious institutions through social, cultural and religious activities to revive Tionghoa ethnic culture (cultural existence). The formulation of the problem in this thesis is what is the content of guanxi values for the Tionghoa, and how is the practice of guanxi in the socio-cultural and religious institutions of the Tionghoa in Padang. This study uses an anthropological approach with qualitative methods through (a) observation, (b) in-depth interviews, (c) literature study and (d) documentation. The research location is in Kampung Pondok Village, West Padang District, and Behind Pondok Village, South Padang District, Padang City. Research informants are Tionghoa businessmen, religious leaders, community leaders, administrators of ethnic Tionghoa socio-cultural organization. The results of this study conclude that (1) guanxi is interpreted as values to achieve goals, and as values or principles of living together or working together. Guanxi of Overseas Tionghoa in Padang have values such as the value of cooperation (hézuò), the value of trust (xin), the value of karma (yè lì), loyalty (zhong), respect (xiao), and harmony (he). (2) Guanxi values are practiced by overseas Tionghoa in socio-cultural and religious institutions in Padang. The practice of guanxi values is implicit in the religious institutions of the See Hien Kiong temple, the Warman Buddhist Temple, and the socio-cultural institutions of the Himpunan Tjinta Teman (HTT). Social, cultural and religious institutions are a unifying forum for ethnic Tionghoa which in their activities show Tionghoa cultural activities. Guanxi values can exist in overseas Tionghoa culture in Padang supported by the practice of social exchange of goods or services in ancestral prayers, death rituals, and celebrations of Tionghoa holidays, and other celebrations. Social exchange takes the form of social assistance provided by actors such as Tionghoa economic actors (entrepreneurs), Buddhists, and Confucians. The process of social exchange carried out by overseas Tionghoa in Padang is referred to as reciprocity which is explained by Mauss who is by giving (the gift). Giving in economic anthropology is analyzed in the economics of personalism as a moral economy. The principle of moral economy is used as a spirit for the Padang Tionghoa as values to achieve goals in the form of social prestige, such as being Toako, Jioko, and Shako. The value of guanxi and social assistance is the principle of social ties or networks that encourage the existence of Tionghoa ethnic culture in Padang in the form of socio-cultural activities such as religious practices, death rituals, celebrations of holidays, and Tionghoa weddings, and other celebrations.
