Abstract
This study is about the analysis of Kevin Kwan's Crazy Rich Asians. The writer analyzed the traditions and culture in the social life of the Chinese community in Singapore contained in the novel. There are several cultural traditions that the writer analyzes in the novel that have differences with Chinese culture. The writer used a postcolonial critique of western representation in analyzing this novel. This study uses the concept of the theory of Orientalism coined by Edward Said (Orientalism), and also the author uses a sociological approach to literary works. After analyzing Crazy Rich Asians, it can be concluded that it can be concluded that in the novel Crazy Rich Asians, there are several Chinese Singaporean cultures that are not in accordance with the original culture, such as modern wedding traditions, bachelor party, and afternoon tea traditions that resemble British culture. In this case, the British colonial period against Singapore was a factor that influenced the change in the original Chinese culture to Chinese culture in Singapore. Kevin Kwan as the author of Crazy Rich Asians, wants to illustrate that Asian people are not as traditionally based on a western perspective. There are two of the three cultural traditions that the writer highlights are cultural traditions that develop and change due to the effects of modern developments, such as wedding traditions and bachelor party culture. There is a legacy from the colonial British who colonized Singapore in the afternoon tea tradition.
