Abstract
Abstract Introduction : Pterygium is triangular, wing -shaped, degenerative, fibrovascular, hyperplastic proliferative tissue actively growing from the conjunctival limbal onto the cornea. Changes in the epithelial cells pterygium include enlargement, flattening, and pyknotic with decreased nucleuscytoplasmic ratio. Conjunctival impression cytology is one of technique for examining the goblet cell density Purpose: To compare the study of goblet cell conjunctival density using impression cytology in pterygium with non pterygium. Method: Analytic cross sectional study on 35 unilateral pterygium patients in M. Djamil and District Hospital at March-June 2014. Conjunctival impression cytology specimens, using Millipore filters strips (3x3 mm) with a pore size of 0.22 μm. Using topical anaesthesia, a filters strip was applied on the surface of the bulbar conjunctiva (on the pterygium, inferonasal/inferotemporal conjunctival and opposite) in pterygium and non pterygium eye. The specimens immediately fixed with formalin 10 % and Hematoxylin Eosin. Evaluation of goblet cell density using Nelson’s grading system . Result: In the body pterygium and Inferonasal / inferotemporal conjunctival, abnormal goblet cell density obtained slightly more in pterygium eyes are 51.4% and 54,3%. While on the opposite side, the abnormal goblet cell density obtained equal on the pterygium eye with non pterygium eye (60%). With the statistical test show no significant difference (p> 0.05) Conclusion: The density of goblet cells more abnormal in the body pterygium and in inferonasal / inferotempral conjunctiva than non pterygium, whereas on the opposite side , he abnormal goblet cell density obtained equal on the pterygium eye with non pterygium eye . Key Works: Pterygium, Millipore filters strip, impression cytology, Nelson`s grading system, goblet cel.
