Abstract
INTRODUCTION : Diabetes mellitus is a systemic condition affecting numerous organs other than the eye. Gluthatione may be important in maintaining protein thiols in the reduced state, thus preventing the formation of high-molecular weight protein aggregates, which are the basis for light scattering and lens opacification. Decreased Glutathione levels have been noticed in human cataract; moreover, these levels are lower in diabetic cataracts than in senile cataracts. METHODS : Analytic cross-sectional study was conducted in September 2013 until February 2014. The nucleus of cataract lens was derived when the patient underwent extracapsular cataract extraction, intracapsular cataract extraction or small incision cataract surgery. It was stored in refrigerator before sent to Biomedic laboratory. Sixteen samples were taken for each group. The data was analyzed by t-test, Mann-Whitney test, ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test,. RESULT : The mean value for total lens glutathione level of senile diabetic cataract is 0.00950 μmol/g (SD = 0,004858), non diabetic is 0.01044 μmol/g (SD = 0.004289). The mean value for lens reduced form of glutathione level of senile diabetic cataract is 0.14737 μmol/g (SD = 0.162457), while non diabetic cataract is 0.08438 μmol/g (SD = 0.077953). CONCLUSION : The mean value of total lens glutathione level in senile diabetic cataract is lower than non diabetic cataract (p = 0.567). The mean value of reduced form glutathione level of senile diabetic cataract lens is higher than non diabetic (p = 0.336). Statistically, there is no significant difference between both groups (p > 0.05) KEYWORDS : Glutathione, senile cataract, diabetes mellitus, non diabetes mellitus
