Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension is the leading cause of death in the elderly. One of the risks caused by hypertension is the disruption of cognitive functions although there are other risks. Cognitive impairment is a major cause of the elderly cannot live independently. This study aimed to determine the relationship between hypertension and cognitive dysfunction in the elderly (aged ≥60 years). Methods: This study is analytic observational, cross-sectional study conducted in Social Institutions Sabai Nan Aluih Sicincin nursing home in July-November 2014. The population is all the elderly people, all the population sampled were 63 respondents. Instrument for measuring blood pressure is mercury sphygmomanometer and a stethoscope, and a tool to measure cognitive function is the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). Bivariate data were analyzed by chi- square test, it’s significant statistically if p value <0.05. Results: The results showed 39.7% of respondents had hypertension and 76.2% of respondents suffered impaired cognitive function. Bivariate analyze with chi-square test obtain p value = 0.037 with OR = 5.98. It can be concluded that there is a statistically significant relationship between hypertension and cognitive function, Discussion: An elderly who suffer from hypertension more at risk of cognitive impairment compared to an elderly who do not suffer from hypertension. An elderly should be control their blood pressure to reduce risk of cognitive function impairment. Keyword: Hypertension, Cognitive Function, Elderly
