Abstract

This thesis analyzes the relationship between humans and nature in the classic children's literature entitled The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, The Magic Finger by Road Dahl, and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Last Battle by C. S. Lewis. It explores the interactions between human and nature as depicted in the three books, whether they are mutually beneficial or harmful for one party. Additionally, it also explains whether the book is relevant to today's environmental problems and how it conveys its moral message to young readers. The thesis applies qualitative methods and applies the theory of ecocriticism by Cheryl Glotfelty and Harold Fromm. The results show that the three books present humans and nature: one which is mutually beneficial, other which is harmful for nature and in return put human in danger as well. It also finds that those books present environmental problems that occur in the present even though the books have been published in many years ago. The reciprocal relationship between humans and nature shows that humans cannot mistreat nature because it will have an impact on humans themselves.
