Abstract

This research discusses race, class and gender discrimination against black American women as reflected in Nikki Giovanni and Audre Lorde’s selected poems. The poems are "Nikki Rosa", "Woman" and "A Poem For A Lady Whose Voice I Like" by Nikki Giovanni and "Power", "The Black Unicorn" and "A Woman Speaks" by Audre Lorde. This research reveals some impacts of gender discrimination and social class inequality against black American women’s life, such as black American women are marginalized, subordinated and targeted for violence in social life and also receive negative stereotypes. The writer applies Critical Race Theory by Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic to discuss Giovanni and Audre’s poems represent black American women’s voices as minority race, second class-citizens and lesbian black women in America. The analysis of this research shows that black American women face significant challenges to get justice and equality among white people in America. To create justice and equality, black American women must fight for their rights.
