Abstract

In this thesis, the writer discusses the types of politeness strategies found in refusal expression in the reality comedy show called What The Fit. The objective of this research is to identify the politeness strategies uttered by the host and all participants in the reality show. The data are taken from the conversation and interaction of the host and his participants by using the observational method then analyzed by applying Brown and Levinson’s theory. The result of the analysis is presented with explanation sentences and a table. From 40 conversations using refusal expression containing politeness, the writer found four types of politeness. They are bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. The writer obtained 26 utterances using the bald on-record strategy, 8 utterances using positive politeness, 3 utterances using negative politeness, and 3 utterances using off-record. The results showed that bald-on record is more often used by the host and his participants in the show. This research also discusses the factors that influenced the choice of politeness strategies.
