Abstract
This research analyzes the psychological problem of a character named the Underground Man in Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel entitled Notes from the Underground. This study aims to find the identification of unconscious motives that affects the main character’s personality and the impact of these unconscious motives on the main character’s behavior and its relationship with his environment. The author applies the close reading method to the novel in collecting data. The data are then analyzed by using a psychoanalytic approach and the theory proposed by Sigmund Freud which focuses on three physical zones of mental processes: id, ego, and superego. The writer also applies a psychoanalytic social theory by Karen Horney. The results showed that the Underground Man's behavior was influenced by the absence of family member and the loss of a father figure. The effects of this motive led The Underground Man's hatred towards society, experiencing social awkwardness and anxiety, rejection of affection, and isolating from the environment.
