Abstract

This research focuses on the impoliteness strategies that the readers use in the reply section on a tweet by the official Twitter account of FC Barcelona. This research aims to identify and describe the types and functions of impoliteness used by the readers. The data was collecting using the non-participant observational technique. The theory of Impoliteness strategies proposed by Culpeper (1996) is applied to describe the types. The idea of functional impoliteness submitted by Abbas and Ismail (2015) is used to identify the intentional reason. Furthermore, the result of this researcher is presented using tables and descriptively. The analysis result has shown that are 110 utterances that contain four types of impoliteness that the readers use. The types are (1) Bald on record 33 times (30%), Positive impoliteness 31 times (28%), Negative impoliteness 23 times (21%), and Sarcasm or Mock politeness 23 times (21%). Then, the last type, Withhold politeness did not found because of hard to see the absence of etiquette on social media that was purposely to inform with no response. The most frequent types that are uttered are Bald on record. The FC Barcelona’s face has lost that being more in stacks to open insult and the habit of football lovers to speak straightly. Afterward, there was four functional impoliteness used by the readers in this analysis. The four functions are: Mocking 47 times (43%), Defending face six times (7%), Psychological 30 times (27%), and Criticism 26 times (24%). The most frequent functions are mocking because of the habits of Football lovers to making fun of the opponents or other teams except their favorite teams.
