Abstract

This thesis discusses the translation procedure of complex noun phrases from the short story entitled The Cask of Amontillado to Indonesian. This study aims to analyze the translation procedure used by Anton Kurnia in translating complex noun phrases in the short story translation in Indonesian entitled Anggur Amontillado. Data collections complete by grouping complex noun phrases in the original language text. The data that has been collected is then analyzed based on the theory proposed by Greenbaum (2002) to analyze complex noun phrases and the theory of translation procedures by Newmark (1988). Of the 14 data analyzed, nine translation procedures were found: reduction and expansion, paraphrasing, couplet, modulation, shift or transposition, naturalization, synonym, literal translation, and compensation. The dominant procedures found were reduction and expansion. This procedure shows that the translator eliminates and replaces many words from the source language in the target language, which categorizes as a reduction in reduction and expansion procedure. So that reduction and expansion are the most common procedures.
