Abstract
This thesis discusess Oscar Wilde’s novel entitled The Picture of Dorian Gray and John Maxwell Coetzee’s novel Disgrace. The topic of this research is Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) experienced by two main male characters, Dorian Gray and David Lurie. This research is conducted by applying psychoanalytic criticism, especially the analysis of fictional characters using language and psychological research methods. The theory used is the basic theory from Sigmund Freud about id, ego and superego. The analysis shows that Gray and Lurie experienced Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), which is caused by excessive id domination. Gray and Lurie experienced the same symptoms of being Self-Importance. In the end, Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) turns Gray into a greedy, self-obsessed person, while Lurie turns into a humble person.
