Abstract

This thesis discusses the pronunciation errors committed by the college students at Universiti Malaysia Pahang. The aims of this research are to find out the type of errors and the causes of errors. The data of the research were taken from the pronounciation produced by the third year Engineering students of Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP). Students as participants in this research consist of 15 students (8 female, 7 male). The data was collected by recording the students when they read the list of English sentences was given by the writer. Then, the writer used some theories in analyzing the data such as the theory types of error by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (In Ellis 2008), the theory causes of errors by Richard (In Ellis 2008), and theory type of consonant substitution by Skandera and Barleigh (2005). Futhermore, the writer found out the type of error based on the substitution of consonant, they are : stopping and devoicing. Stopping, replaced fricative sound with stop sound, such as the sound /s/ replaced the sound /z/, the sound /t/ replaced the sound /θ/, and the sound /d/ replaced the sound /ð/.as /d/ and /θ/ as /t/.They are caused by both interference and intralingual errors.
