Abstract

This research aims to describe the types and functions of expressive utterances used by Ellen and Elias in the Ellen DeGeneres Show on YouTube. Then, this study also aims to determine whether the perlocutionary effects are successful or unsuccessful in the conversation. The data in this research were collected by downloading and observing the videos. Data were collected by taking notes of the utterances and transcribing each of the expressive utterances found in the three videos. Data were analyzed by using the theory of speech acts by Searle (1979), the theory of functions of expressive utterance by Ronan (2015), functions of expressive utterance by Searle and Vanderveken (1985), and the theory of context proposed by Leech (1983). These theories are used to describe types and functions of expressive utterance used by Ellen with Elias in the Ellen DeGeneres Show. Based on this research, there are 82 expressive utterances found in the conversation from three videos. The type of agreement is the most dominant expressive illocutionary act used by Ellen and Elias with a percentage of 84,146%. The most dominant function of expressive utterance used by Ellen and Elias is the function to compliment with the percentage of 67,073%. From the result of the analysis, it can be seen that almost every utterance is successfully meeting the perlocutionary act.
