Abstract
Sphygmomanometer cuffs have the potential risk to spread nosocomial infections in hospitals. Cuffs are generally made of woven fabrics made from nylon or polyester. This base material is an excellent substrate for fungal growth under suitable humidity and temperature conditions. This study aims to identify pathogenic fungi of sphygmomanometer cuffs in the several Intensive rooms (ICU, CVCU, ROI, PACU) RSUP. Dr. M. Djamil Padang. This research was a descriptive study carried out in January-February 2020. This study used a total sampling technique on 24 sphygmomanometer cuffs. The examination was carried out with a smear on two sample areas, namely the inner and outer cuffs, then the planting of fungi was carried out on Sabouraud glucose agar and incubated in the microbiology laboratory. The results of the colony were identified based on the morphology of the colonies that grew macroscopically by direct observation. Microscopically, there are two ways examination, Gram staining and using a duct tape then observed under a microscope. The results of this study, showed the contamination in 18 sample areas by pathogenic fungi namely Candida sp. and Aspergillus sp. The contamination were found on the ICU’s inner and outer part of the sphygmomanometer cuffs (42.86%) ROI’s inner and outer part of the cuffs (40%) PACU’s inner part the cuffs (75%), and CVCU’s inner part of the cuffs(50%). Key words : sphygmomanometer cuffs, fungal pathogen, ICU, ROI, PACU, CVCU
