Abstract

This thesis is about the form of request, the request strategy in relation to the social variables. The data of this thesis were collected from the third-year students of English department of Andalas University, the year of study is 2016. The researcher gets the data from 45 participants, ten males and 35 females. The data were collected by using DCT (Discourse Completion Test). In that DCT, they are 12 situations that have to be filled in. The situation was like the usual situation that happened around the students. Every situation was designed according to different social variables related to power, distance, and impositions of the request. The writer found that request that frequently produced by the informants is conventionally indirect request. The pattern of forms of request that frequently produced by the respondents is “question” for internal modification, and “address terms, and supportive reason” for external modification. The researcher has found eight strategies that were used by the participants to convey the request. The strategy that frequently used is questioning hearer’s ability and willingness strategy. Social variables give an effect to the respondents in choosing an appropriate strategy. Key words: Interlanguage Pragmatics, Speech Act, Speech Act of Request, Social Variables
