Abstract
Leukemia is the most common neoplastic disease of childhood. It has become one of the causes of high mortality rates in children. The etiology of leukemia is unknown yet currently. It has been suggested that there are some associations between various genetic and environmental factors that play a role in the development of leukemia in children. From this it is necessary to conduct a study to determine the factors associated with the incidence of childhood acute leukemia in Dr.M.Djamil Padang Hospital. This type of research is analytic observation with a case control research design. Chi-square test was performed to find out the association of the variables. Samples was collected by using the consecutive sampling method. The number of samples in this study were 68 peoples who were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data is collected by conducting interviews directly with respondents (parents of children). The results have obtained variables related to the incidence of childhood acute leukemia such as birth weight >3,500 grams (p = 0.021, OR = 3.857), smoking behavior of parents (p = 0.013, OR = 4.117), and household insecticides exposure ( p = 0.024, OR = 3.656). The conclusion of this study, there was significant association between high birth weight, smoking behavior of parents and household insecticides exposure with the incidence of childhood acute leukemia in Dr.M.Djamil Padang Hospital.
