Abstract
ABSTRACT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HEME AND NON-HEME IRON INTAKE WITH SERUM FERRITIN IN WOMEN’S BRIDE CANDIDATE IN PADANG CITY By Wiyola Audina Women in childbearing age are prone to anemia, especially iron deficiency anemia. Serum ferritin can be used as an initial indicator to determine iron deficiency. Decrease in serum ferritin levels can be influenced by iron intake. This study aimed to determine the relationship between heme and non-heme iron intake in women’s bride candidate in Padang City. This research was an analytical study with cross-sectional design. The research sample consisted of 30 women’s bride candidate 20-30 years old. Data on iron intake were taken using Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) and measurements of serum ferritin levels were performed using the Enhanced ChemiLuminescence Immuno Assay (ECLIA) method. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient test. The results showed the mean of heme and non-heme iron intake was 2,76 ± 0,90 mg/day and 3,83 ± 0,97 mg/day and the mean of serum ferritin levels was 46,27 ± 27,61 ng/ml. Based on correlation coefficient test, there was no significant correlation between heme (r=0,094, p=0,622) and non-heme (r=-0,179, p=0,345) iron intake with serum ferritin levels. The conclusion from this study is there is no relationship between heme and nonheme iron intake with serum ferritin levels on women’s bride candidate in Padang City. Keywords: women in childbearing age, heme iron intake, non-heme iron intake, serum ferritin.
