Abstract

This thesis analyzes Jay Asher's work entitled Thirteen Reasons Why and observed from a structuralist approach. The author sees that the literary work needs to be analyzed further because there are codes hidden behind the actions, words and depictions of the characters. The codes are analyzed to get the implied meaning in the work. The author uses the 'Five Codes' theory that was discovered and developed by Roland Barthes. The theory says that the code in literature can be divided into five, namely, proairetic code, hermeneutic code, cultural code, semic code and symbolic code. The results show that there are five types of codes found hidden behind the action, words and dialogues in the story. Based on Barthes’s theory, the writer conclude that Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher deserves to be regarded as a ‘writerly text’ because the novel invite the reader to analyze the work further to find out the hidden meaning behind the codes. The writer also concludes that Thirteen Reasons Why is full of suspense where several elements stand for connotative meaning. The binary oppositions also play an important role because it give a significant differences to convey the theme of the novel to the readers.
