Abstract

Homosexual, especially MSM (Men who Have Sex with Men) in Indonesia, deemed to be a strange community by some of society, whereas according to the estimated global number of MSM increased from a few years. This phenomenon occurred in a few city of Indonesia included Padang City. Until now, their existence in Padang City still became a controversy. Based on religion, tradition and law oftentimes became reference to against this community. This case that determine their decision to coming out or not about their sexual identity. The purpose of this research is to describe and to understand about the dynamic of sexual identity revelation of MSM in Padang City based on the coming out process with the impact. The used approach was the qualitative research (study of phenomenology) with the grand theory of coming out process from Cass (1979) including six stages, which is identity confusion, identity comparison, identity tolerance, identity acceptance, identity pride and identity synthesis. The data collection was done by interview and observation that was conducted during the interview. The informants in this research are three MSM chosen by snowball sampling. The result of this research proves that MSM underwent the dynamic of sexual identity revelation different ways from every passed stage of coming out process. Part of them succeed through all of the stages of coming out process and not for others. But after all, all of them returning back to the first stage which is confusion identity caused by a few factors cause a feel guilty and qualm. That factor are individual pressure to change and social pressure about heterosexual norm. Overall, the conclusion of this research is MSM doesn’t succeed to reveal their sexual identity.
