Abstract

Psoriasis vulgaris is a chronic and recidive inflammatory disease of the skin due to abnormality in growth and differentiation of the epidermal layer, characterized by well-demarcated, erythematous plaque, covered by thick white squama, candle grease sign, Koebner phenomenon, and Auspitz sign. Previous studies have stated that psoriasis vulgaris is associated with high levels of cholesterol. Hypercholesterolemia could increase the severity degree of psoriasis through inflammatory mechanism with involvement of the immune system. This study aims to know the association between cholesterol levels and severity degree in psoriasis vulgaris patients in Dermatovenereology Polyclinic of RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang. This study was an observational analytic with a cross-sectional design. Samples were 22 psoriasis vulgaris patients in Dermatovenereology Polyclinic of RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang, sampled with consecutive sampling technique. This study was conducted using medical records of the patients to obtain the degree of psoriasis vulgaris severity which was assessed with PASI score and directly measured total cholesterol level of the patients. Data analysis used Chi-square test. This study was conducted from July 2019 to January 2020. Most psoriasis vulgaris patients were male (63,6%) and the majority was in the >40 years age group (63,6%). Most severity degree was of a mild degree (68,2%) with mean of cholesterol levels above normal (>200 mg/dl). This study found no statistically significant relationships between total cholesterol levels and severity degree in psoriasis vulgaris (p=0,63 Cl=95%). The results of this study indicated that there is no significant association between total cholesterol levels and severity degree in patients of psoriasis vulgaris in Dermatovenereology Polyclinic of RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang. Keywords: Psoriasis vulgaris, total cholesterol, PASI score.
