Abstract

ABSTRACT This research analyzes losses and gains in the short story of O. Henry entitled "The Count and Wedding Guest" translated into Indonesian by Anton Kurnia entitled "Tamu Pernikahan.” The research is aimed to identify the form of loss and gain, and the types of meaning are loss and gain. The data collection method uses the translational identity with the note-taking technique. In analyzing the data, the theories that are used the loss and gain of meaning that purposed by Bassnet (1991) and Soemarno (1999) to identify the types of meaning that loss and gain. The results of the analysis are presented in descriptive and verbal. The results of the research have shown that the loss of meaning occurs in the form of words, phrases, clause, and the sentence, the gain of meaning occurs in the form of words, phrases, and clauses. The writer found 60 data and analyzed 20 of them. The data consisted of 36 losses and 24 gains. The 36 loss of meaning that are in the form of 18 words, nine phrases, three clauses, and four sentences. While the number of gain is less, from 24 gains of meaning, there are in the form of 10 words, 12 phrases, and two clauses. The types of meaning are lexical, grammatical, textual, sociocultural, situational or contextual, and implicit meanings. Key words: loss, gain, and types of meaning.
