Abstract

This undergraduate thesis examines the theme of alienation in Kurt Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions, focusing on the characters of Trout and Hoover. Using a Marxist framework of literary criticism, the research analyzes how capitalist society fosters alienation and absurdity in human relationships. It concludes that alienation is the result of capitalist society. The exploration of alienation in Breakfast of Champions serves as a critique of contemporary social issues, emphasizing the importance of understanding the complexity of human relationships within a capitalist society, as the characters' experiences resonate with the ongoing struggle against isolation in an increasingly materialistic world. The novel ultimately suggests that authentic human connection and creative expression are one of the essential to overcoming alienation. Skripsi ini meneliti tema keterasingan dalam novel Breakfast of Champions karya Kurt Vonnegut, dengan fokus pada karakter Trout dan Hoover. Dengan menggunakan kerangka kerja kritik sastra Marxis, penelitian ini menganalisis bagaimana masyarakat kapitalis mendorong keterasingan dan absurditas dalam hubungan antar manusia. Skripsi ini menyimpulkan bahwa alienasi adalah hasil dari kapitalis. Eksplorasi keterasingan dalam Breakfast of Champions berfungsi sebagai kritik terhadap isu-isu sosial kontemporer, yang menekankan pentingnya memahami kompleksitas hubungan manusia dalam kapitalis, karena pengalaman para karakter beresonansi dengan perjuangan yang sedang berlangsung melawan keterasingan di dunia yang semakin materialistis. Novel ini pada akhirnya menyiratkan bahwa hubungan otentik antarmanusia dan ekspresi kreatif salah satu cara yang penting dalam mengatasi alienasi.
