Abstract

The palm oil industry is a leading sector in Indonesia, contributing significantly to the national economy. Various industries, such as palm oil mills, biodiesel mills, and oleochemical plants, utilize palm oil as their primary raw material. These industries produce large amounts of liquid waste. This waste contains high levels of organic matter, such as oil, fat, and suspended solids (TSS), and has a high Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), potentially polluting the environment if not properly treated. This study aims to evaluate and optimize the type and dosage of coagulant used in the treatment of liquid waste from the palm oil industry and its derivatives to achieve efficient, effective, and economical processing results. The method used in this study was a laboratory test using the jar test technique to determine the effect of variations in coagulant dosage and type on changes in pH, COD, and TSS values, as well as an operational cost analysis. Three types of coagulants were used in this study: lime, polyaluminum chloride (PAC), and aluminum sulfate (Al₂(SO₄)₃), with the addition of polyacrylamide flocculant to help form larger flocs. The study was conducted in the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) laboratory of PT. Kawasan Industri Dumai. The results showed that the combination of 1750 ppm lime and 2500 ppm Al₂(SO₄)₃ produced optimum results with a COD reduction efficiency of 33% and a TSS reduction efficiency of 83%, along with the lowest operational costs of Rp 5,838.03/m³. Meanwhile, the combination of PAC and lime resulted in good COD and TSS reductions but with higher operational costs. Therefore, the combination of lime and Al₂(SO₄)₃ is the best alternative for treating liquid waste from the palm oil and its derivatives industry because it balances process effectiveness and operational cost efficiency.
