Abstract

This study examines the use of idiomatic expressions in the film Kung Fu Panda 4 as a tool for communication between characters, conveying messages implicitly to make the conversation look more natural and expressive. The analysis is based on Adam Makkai's (1972) Stratification theory to identify five types of idioms: Tournure Idioms, Phrasal Verb Idioms, Irreversible Binomial Idioms, Phrasal Compound Idioms, and Incorporating Verb Idioms. In addition, O'Dell and McCarthy's (2010) theory of idiom function is used to analyze the function of idioms in the context of dialogue. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The analysis results show that there are 26 Tournure Idioms, 14 Phrasal Verb Idioms, 2 Irreversible Binomial Idioms, and 4 Phrasal Compound Idioms. In terms of function, idioms are mainly used for advising and warning 14, followed by seven telling stories (7 responding to what people say, 8 expressing success and failure, emphasizing 9, and 1 agreeing and disagreeing These findings demonstrate that idioms play a crucial role in developing characterization and conveying emotions in films. As such, the use of idiomatic expressions in film dialogue plays a crucial role in conveying meaning effectively and clearly.
