Abstract
xiii ABSTRACT This research aims to analyze the errors committed by the 11th grade students at Darul Arafah Raya Islamic Boarding School, in the production and perception of English fricative consonants. The focus of this research is to identify the errors and all the factors that influenced the errors. The method applied is qualitative method by using reading aloud and interviews as data collection techniques. The homogeneous sampling method within the purposive sampling approach is applied to select 20 participants, consisting of 20 female students from the same teacher and the same language environment. In the data collection process, the ability of the students' production and perception of fricative consonants were identified through reading aloud video by the participants which were then followed by an interview session via zoom meeting to explore the factors that caused the errors. The theories used in the process of analyzing data include "Syllable theory" by Giegerich (2005), "interlanguage" by Gass & Selinker (2009) and Ellis (2003), which is supported by Corder (1967) on the theory of “Error Analysis”. Error analysis showed results that were divided into nine patterns, namely /v/ → /f/*, /Ɵ/ → /t/*, /ʃ/ → /s/*, /f/ → /p/*, /ð/ → /d/*, /ð/ → /t/*, /z/ → /s/*, /s/ → /ʧ/, /s/ → /t/* and two factors that affect the occurrence of errors, namely interlingual and intralingual factors. The results showed that the error was dominated by an intralingual factors of 68.56%, because most of the fricative consonants were not present or written differently in Indonesian pronunciation. Keywords: pronunciation error, English fricative consonants, speech production and perception, syllable structure, interlanguage, L1 interference.
