Abstract

This research examines the emojis used by @OGEsports on X (Twitter). This research aims to analyze the meaning of emojis based on Rahardi’s theory (2018) and the pragmatic function of emojis according to Yus’ theory (2016). The data was taken from the official X (Twitter) account of @OGEsports, which posted tweets from January 2024 to March 2024. The data were analyzed using qualitative research methods, and the results were presented descriptively. The results of this research show that from 246 tweets, 96 were found using emojis. Situational and cultural contexts are employed to determine meaning in this research because tweets often tend to be contextualized by specific events. The meaning of emojis found in @OGEsports posts are frequently used showing respect, giving information, and expressing feeling. The most pragmatic function of emoji in the research is adding a feeling or emotion toward the propositional content of the utterance, because this function reflects the characteristics of digital communication, which is highly expressive and oriented towards affective events or moments.
