Abstract

University students are part of the productive age group who are vulnerable to various psychosocial challenges, including mental health issues and the TRIAD of Adolescent Reproductive Health (sexuality, HIV/AIDS, and drug abuse). The Student Activity Unit of the Information and Counseling Center “Andalas Group” (UKM PIKMAG) serves as a peer-based organization that provides information, education, and counseling services within Universitas Andalas. This research aims to describe the benefits and utilization behavior of UKM PIKMAG among Universitas Andalas students. Theoretically, this study adopts Robert K. Merton’s structural functionalism theory, which emphasizes the manifest and latent functions of social institutions in maintaining the balance of social systems within the university environment. This study employs a quantitative descriptive method with a stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 100 Universitas Andalas students, selected based on faculty representation. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to illustrate frequencies, percentages, means, and categorical interpretations of students’ perceptions regarding the benefits and utilization behavior of UKM PIKMAG. The results of the study indicate that, on average, students perceive the existence of UKM PIKMAG as having beneficial potential. However, in terms of utilization behavior, the overall level of student engagement with UKM PIKMAG remains low. The average mean score for online utilization is 1.76 (low category), indicating that student participation in online activities and interactions through PIKMAG’s social media platforms is still limited. Meanwhile, the average mean score for offline utilization is 1.46 (very low category), suggesting that only a small proportion of students actively participate in offline activities. Overall, the combined mean score of 1.61 shows that although UKM PIKMAG holds significant potential to provide benefits through counseling services, mental health education, and reproductive health programs, the level of student participation in utilizing these services remains low.
