Abstract
This study aims to analyze the audience’s interpretation of the Dress Well message in Emily in Paris season 1, episode 2, using Stuart Hall’s reception analysis theory. Dress Well is understood not merely as neat and fashionable dressing, but also as a representation of identity, social status, and cultural norms. This research employs a qualitative approach with a constructivist paradigm, conducting in-depth interviews with youth informants aged 18–25 from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds. The findings reveal three audience positions regarding the Dress Well message: (1) Dominant position, where viewers accept the intended meaning, seeing dressing well as a form of confidence and cultural adaptation; (2) Negotiated position, where viewers recognize its importance but adapt it to their own context and capabilities; and (3) Oppositional position, where viewers reject the message, perceiving Dress Well as overly materialistic or irrelevant. These results highlight that audience reception is shaped by their socio-cultural backgrounds, and that Dress Well in popular media can influence perceptions of identity and societal values.
