Abstract

This research discusses and explores the social factors that influence the attrition of Cantonese experienced by Jenny, the child of an immigrant family who grew up in an English-speaking environment, as shown in a video from the NBC News YouTube channel entitled A Gap That Takes A Lifetime to Bridge: An Asian American's Effort to Relearn Her Language. This research was conducted using the Acculturation theory proposed by John H. Schumann (1978). The data for this study were taken from the official NBC News YouTube channel, uploaded on March 5, 2022. The data were analyzed using qualitative research methods, and the results were presented descriptively. 10 points of data in the form of utterances were analyzed in this research. The results of this research reveal that five social factors are causing the attrition of Cantonese experienced by Jenny, namely: Integration Pattern (Assimilation), Cohesiveness, Enclosure, Social Dominance, and Attitude. Cohesiveness is the most dominant factor causing the attrition of Cantonese experienced by Jenny, as evidenced by its appearance five times in the analyzed data. This research concludes that language attrition is greatly influenced by social dynamics, especially when individuals are integrated into an environment that prioritizes the dominant language. This research highlights the importance of a supportive social environment as an effort to preserve heritage languages as minority languages and maintain one's cultural identity.
