Abstract

This thesis discusses symbolism and narrative structure in the novel The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. This analysis aims to see how these two formal elements are able to build the organic unity towards the theme of the novel. The research uses a theoretical approach from New Criticism and only focuses on the existing formal elements. They found the use of symbols in this novel that aim to convey the issue and theme of regret. The delivery of this symbol is through imagery that often appears repeatedly, which gives rise to the motif of self-discovery. The narrative structure in this novel also shows that the novel has a structure that directs readers to understand the journey of the main character in erasing his regret. All the symbols and narrative structures found in this novel have the organic unity with the theme about the journey of erasing regret.
