Abstract
This study examines the politeness strategies employed by students in their email communication with lecturers. The objective of the research is to identify various types of politeness strategies employed by English Department students at Andalas University class of 2021 and to examine the factors that influence these strategies. The data for the study were collected from 50 email screenshots, representing 25 students, using purposive sampling. The analysis of the data was conducted using Brown and Levinson’s theory (1987), which includes types of politeness strategies and factors influencing these strategies. The results of the analysis employed a qualitative descriptive approach and present the results in a table mapping politeness strategy types to influencing factors. The research findings indicate that 195 sentences can be classified into four types of politeness strategies, which include: (1) Bald On Record, (2) Positive Politeness, (3) Negative Politeness, and (4) Off-Record. The findings are presented through screenshots of each student’s email, totaling 20 emails representing the emails obtained for analysis. The results indicate that positive politeness is the most commonly used politeness strategy when sending an email between students and lecturers. This strategy aims to foster mutual respect and strengthen social relationships. One significant factor influencing the selection of these strategies is relative power; students often acknowledge the unequal power dynamics where they have less power than their lecturers.
