Abstract

ABSTRACT This research discusses the obsession with physical beauty experienced by teenagers in the novel "Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld. The focus of this research is on the main character, who is obsessed with beauty and desires to undergo plastic surgery. The cause of this obsession is the desire to confronts beauty standard to achieve perfection in order to receive good treatment and special privileges. The betrayal of friends and feeling lonely also a have a significant impact in causes the obsession. This research uses psychoanalysis theory developed by Sigmund Freud (id, ego, superego), and self defense mechanisms. The research method consists of three stages: data collection, data analysis, and presentation of the analysis results descriptively. The author finds that teenager's final decision was made after experiencing significant psychological development and her dominant superego made her decided to undergone plastic surgery as a responsibility for her betrayal instead for aesthetic appearance.
