Abstract
ABSTRACT This thesis analyzes the issue of environmental exploitation carried out by local communities in America and its after-effects on the lives of people around the world in Margaret Atwood's novel Oryx and Crake. The focus of this study is to determine the exploitation behavior shown by the characters towards their environment, both consciously and unconsciously. To examine the impact of environmental damage and the elimination of human civilization on earth, the researcher applies ecocriticism as the main theory given by Greg Garrard about the concept of "apocalypse" and is supported by the mimetic approach by M. H. Abrams. The analysis method is based on a qualitative descriptive method using Margaret Atwood's novel Oryx and Crake as primary data and other relevant sources as secondary data. As a result of the analysis, Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood clearly represents the reality in America, as evidenced by the similarity of the data. The researcher found three categories of society that have the potential to exploit nature through the characters in the novel, humans act as destroyers, which include greed, stupidity, and arbitrary behavior. Researcher realize that these behaviors are things that trigger environmental crises that will occur in the future such as large-scale pandemics.
