Abstract

This research aims to analyze the deictic expression of verbal abuse in the Cinderella (2015) film using Deixis theory by Marmaridou (2000). The main focus of this research is to analyze the characteristics of verbal abuse according to Patricia Evan’s book and the deictic expression that is used in the data that contains verbal abuse, which is done by Cinderella’s stepfamily. The method of this research is descriptive-qualitative. To collect the data, there are some steps have been taken: (1) Watching the film multiple times and selecting relevant scenes, (2) transcribing the dialogue from selected scenes, (3) identifying the context of the utterances, and (4) choosing the utterance in selected dialogues that show verbal abuse from the stepfamily to Cinderella. Types of deixis are identified as: (1) person-social deixis, (2) place deixis, (3) time deixis, and (4) discourse deixis. From the analysis, the characteristics of verbal abuse that is found are it is hurtful for the victim, attacks their nature and abilities, overtly like name-calling, body-shaming, and humiliation, can be expressed in an extremely sincere and concerned way, manipulating and controlling the victim, is very insidious, unpredictable, expresses a double message, and intensifies as time goes by. Besides, the abusers use all of the types of Deixis in uttering the verbal abuse. In addition, the results further indicate that deictic expressions serve not just as tools for reference but also as linguistic tactics to exercise control, create emotional detachment, and uphold social hierarchies. Furthermore, the relationship between deictic expressions and verbal abuse stems from the way language is employed to place the victim in a subordinate position, both socially and emotionally, through what may appear to be simple yet profoundly significant language choices.
