Abstract

This research is about the use of figurative language in song lyrics especially song lyrics in an album namely Nicole by NIKI. The aims of this research are to identify and distinguish the types of figurative language, provide explanations for each type, and determine the most dominant type used from the twelve song lyrics included in Nicole. The method applied in the research is qualitative and quantitative. Every figurative language found from each song is listed in tables which are then analyzed in sequence. The result of this research shows that only 10 types of figurative language were found from Nicole namely symbol, imagery, metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, metonymy, synecdoche, paradox, and understatement, while apostrophe and allusion are not used by NIKI. From the 12 songs, 114 figurative languages were found and metaphor appears 65 times. Therefore, it is determined that metaphor is the most dominant type of figurative language from all the songs in Nicole.
