Abstract

The use of antipsychotic drugs in treating schizophrenia can cause side effects. One of the side effects is in the form of blood dyscrasias such as leukopenia to the acute state of agranulocytosis. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the length of antipsychotic administration and the calculation count and differential count of leukocytes in schizophenia patients in the mental hospital HB Saanin Padang. This study uses a comparative analytic categorical method of two unpaired groups with a cross sectional approach according to the separation of therapy groups in the form of short-term use (<6 months) and long-term (≥6 months). This research instrument uses a computerized hematology analyzer for calculating leukocyte counts and manual counts for differential count calculations. Data analysis is using Fisher's exact test. Sampling was carried out according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria by calculating the comparative categorical analytic sample formula of the two unpaired groups. The results of univariate analysis showed that most patients experienced a decrease in the number of leukocytes in the duration of antipsychotic use for more than six months (66.67%). The results of bivariate analysis with Fisher's test showed p value = 0.008 to count the type of leukocytes which showed a significant relationship between the length of antipsychotic use and the count of leukocytes. However, the p value = 1.000 for leukocyte count shows that there is no significant relationship between the length of antipsychotic use and the leukocyte count of schizophrenic patients.
