Abstract
ABSTRACT Criminal offenders who have been accused imprisonment are called prisoners and held in the prison. During their sentences in the prison, the prisoners worry about their life, their family, and also their life in the future. Correctional institutions given them facilities like guidance and coaching which are expected to grow an optimism for the prisoners. The purpose of this study was to describe optimism of the prisoners. This study uses quantitative descriptive research method with the basis of optimism theory from Carver and Scheier (2002). The measuring instrument used is a questionnaire adapted from the Life Orientation Test-Revised consisting of 10 items. Reliability was calculated using the Alpha-cronbach method and obtained 0.795. This study using accidental sampling technique. Based on the results of the study, it was conclude that the optimism of prisoners at the Class II B Correctional in Payakumbuh was in the high category, it means that prisoners have confidence and hope their life will be better in the future.
