Abstract
This study discussed request strategies used in the utterances of 911 emergency call recordings involving public figures. This research aims to examine the categorization types of request strategies according to Blum-Kulka, House and Kasper’s (1989) framework to discover the most dominantly used request strategies. The data was derived from the transcription of 10 recorded 911 emergency calls involving 9 public figures ranging from 1993 to 2023. The utterances analyzed in this research were from both parties in the call: the dispatcher and the caller. The data was analyzed using a qualitative approach, and the results were presented descriptively. From all the data analyzed, the result shows that 176 utterances employed request strategies. The result shows that all 9 categorization types of request strategies are present in all 10 recordings. The most used strategies found is mood derivable, which occurs 68 times (38,64%). Another framework by Brown and Levinson (1987) was used to explore the factors that influence the use of the strategies. There are 2 possible factors that influence the use of request strategies by the speaker from the findings. The factor influencing most of the request use is relevant circumstances, which occur 143 times (81,25%). This interpretation reflects the contextual factors that shape the speaker’s choice of strategies.
