Abstract

Forever Chemicals, or Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), are highly stable and persistent chemical compounds. These substances are difficult to break down naturally, allowing them to remain in the environment and the human body for extended periods. PFAS are widely used in various consumer products for daily use. Exposure to PFAS has been proven to negatively impact health, including hormonal disruptions, immune system disorders, and an increased risk of chronic diseases. This study aims to assess the level of knowledge and awareness among housewives regarding the presence and potential dangers of forever chemicals in daily life. This study employed a descriptive method with a survey approach, conducted from November to December 2024. The research sample consisted of 522 housewives from various regions in Indonesia, with data collected through a questionnaire comprising 48 questions distributed via Google Forms. The research results indicate that the majority of housewives have a moderate level of knowledge and awareness regarding forever chemicals. This is attributed to the limited availability of information and the lack of socialization regarding the dangers of forever chemicals in daily life. Consequently, while housewives recognize the potential risks, their understanding of forever chemicals and their long-term health implications remains limited. The study concludes that broader education on the health risks of forever chemicals and the importance of choosing safer products for health and the environment is necessary. Efforts from various stakeholders, including the government and industry, are needed to strengthen regulations and improve transparency regarding the chemical content of household products.
