Abstract

This thesis discussed the noun phrases and the syntactic functions used in Adele's song lyrics. The Adele song lyrics analyzed in this thesis were Chasing Pavements “19”, Rolling in the Deep “21‟, Hello “25‟, and Easy on Me “30‟. The objectives of this study were: (1) to find out the structure of syntactical categories of noun phrase elements used in Adele's selected song lyrics, and (2) to find out the syntactic functions of noun phrases in Adele's selected song lyrics. The theory used for analyzing noun phrases from the 4 song lyrics on each of Adele's albums was Noel Burton-Roberts' (2016) theory for tree diagrams and Randolph Quirk and Sydney Greenbaum's (1979) theory for syntactic functions in noun phrases. This study employed a qualitative method. The writer used 4 Adele song lyrics from each album as data, which were then classified, calculated, and analyzed. The writer found 8 structures of noun phrases in Adele's four song lyrics on each album. Of these 8 structures, 3 were found in each song lyric: Pronoun, Noun, and Determiner + Noun. These were followed by, Determiner + Noun + Prepositional Phrase + Pronoun, Determiner + Noun + Prepositional Phrase + Pronoun + Noun, Determiner + Adjective + Noun, Determiner + Noun + Noun, and Adjective + Noun. The syntactic functions of the noun phrases found in the 4 song lyrics on each album included Subject, Direct Object, Object of Preposition, and Subject Complement, followed by Adverbial of Frequency and Adverbial of Place.
