Abstract
This research discusses the Metaphor found in the headline news of the Jakarta Post related to the Football World Cup 2022. The research data are limited to the headline news published from October 2022 to January 2023. This research aims to identify the types of Metaphors and to find the types of connotations of the Metaphor used in the headline news of the Jakarta Post. The researcher used the note taking technique to collect the data. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses the theory by Lakoff & Johnson (1980) and supported by the theory of meaning by Leech (1981). The data collected in this research is presented descriptively. The researcher found 24 headline news of the Jakarta Post related to football World Cup 2022 that contain metaphors. The result of this research showed that there were 13 data containing structural Metaphors, 8 data ontological Metaphors, and 3 data containing orientational Metaphors. The use of Metaphor in headline news has connotations, they are positive connotation with 17 data, 5 data for negative connotation, and 2 data for neutral connotation. From the result, the most dominant type of Metaphor found in the headline news is structural Metaphor, and the types of connotations most common type found in the Metaphor is positive connotation. The use of connotation in metaphorical expression provides the emotional and cultural depth that makes metaphors powerful.
