Abstract

This study aims to find out the errors students make in pronouncing English fricative dental consonant sounds, the factors that influence pronunciation, and the causes of their errors in pronouncing English fricative dental consonant sounds. In this study, the researcher applied a descriptive qualitative method. There are 30 students became participants and were taken from Senior High School 14 Padang students in the academic year 2023/2024. For data collection, the researcher used pronunciation tests and written interview techniques. The documents in this study are video recordings of students during the pronunciation test and student answer sheets for written interviews. The video recording was used to analyze students' pronunciation of producing fricative dental consonants and to identify the cause of the error based on what the students produced. The answers in the written interview have been used to analyze the factors that influence students' pronunciation in producing fricative dental consonants. The results of this study show that students produced fricative dental consonant sounds by placing the tip of the tongue in the back of the upper teeth close to the gums, resulting in plosive alveolar consonant sounds. Students replaced the sounds /θ/ with /t/ and /ð/ with /d/, /t/, and /θ/. Students change the voiced consonant /ð/ to the voiceless consonants /t/ and /θ/. They also change the manner of articulation, from fricative to plosive, and change the place of articulation, from dental to alveolar. The frequency of occurrence of students' errors in producing dental consonant sounds /θ/ is 86.67 percent and the sound /ð/ is 93.67 percent. The causes of students' errors in producing dental consonants are interlingual, intralingual, and developmental errors. Meanwhile, the factors that influence students' pronunciation are Interference from their mother tongue and the teacher in the classroom did not expose the pronunciation of English words.
