Abstract

Death is the process of cessation of cellular function in tissues and organs. One of the leading causes of unnatural deaths is road traffic accidents (RTA). According to the WHO, in 2021, there will be 1.19 million deaths globally due to RTA, with the Southeast Asian region contributing 28% of the global burden. In Indonesia, from 2021 to 2022, the RTA rate increased by 34.36%, accompanied by an 11.34% rise in the number of fatalities. This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at the Forensic Department of Dr. M. Djamil Hospital Padang. The data used were data recording deaths due to road traffic accidents and data on the results of external examinations recorded from 2021-2023. Samples were selected based on inclusion criteria, focusing on the number of accidents, those with and without external examination, age, gender, user category, location of injury, type of injury, and type of accident. Data were analyzed univariately to describe fatalities in the last three years. The results showed an increase in the number of deaths in three years. The largest age group was 19-44 (36.9%), with male gender dominance. The majority of deaths occurred in motorcyclists (50.8%). The most common injury location was the upper extremity (20.3%). The most common type of injury was abrasions(45.5%). In this study, it was found that one victim did not only have one injury location or one type of injury but involved several types of injuries in various parts of the victim's body. Car-Motorcycle collisions were the most common, at 41.5%. This study shows that there is a need to socialize road traffic accidents to motorcyclists, especially among motorcyclists and productive age groups.
