Abstract

Optic neuritis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the optic nerve, which can lead to visual impairment. This condition may be unilateral or bilateral and is triggered by inflammation and infection. Based on the location of inflammation, optic neuritis is classified into papillitis, retrobulbar neuritis, and neuroretinitis. The ONTT study indicates that corticosteroids are only beneficial for accelerating visual recovery within the first two weeks. This study aims to identify and provide information on the profile of optic neuritis patients at the Eye Department of RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang from 2021 to 2023. This descriptive study explores the profile of optic neuritis patients at the mentioned hospital. The research was conducted from December 2023 to June 2024 using medical record data. The sample was drawn from the total population of optic neuritis patients recorded at the hospital from 2021 to 2023, employing a total sampling technique. The results indicate that most patients are aged between 11 and 19 years (53%), with a higher prevalence in females (66.7%). Most cases of optic neuritis are unilateral (60%). Visual impairment assessment showed an increase in patients with mild or no visual impairment in the left eye, while the right eye showed a decrease. The number of patients with severe visual impairment or blindness in the right eye increased, and a reduction in light perception was noted in both eyes. In conclusion, the majority of optic neuritis patients are in the 11-20 year age group, females are more commonly affected, and unilateral laterality is the most frequent presentation.
