Abstract
This research highlights the anxiety and defense mechanisms portrayed in Lindsay Edgecombe’s character throughout Lindsay’s behavior in the novel Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. The aims of this research are (1) to reveal the unsconcious motive that drives Lindsay Edgecombe’s anxiety and the symptoms of anxiety shown by Lindsay Edgecombe; and (2) to examine how Lindsay copes with her anxiety. This research applied qualitative descriptive method. This research used psychoanalytical theory by Sigmund Freud to analyze the anxiety and defense mechanisms shown in the character of Lindsay Edgecombe. The result shows that Lindsay Edgecombe suffers from neurotic anxiety and moral anxiety, driven by fear of abandonment, which is the unconcious motive for her anxiety. Furthermore, the findings reveal that Lindsay Edgecombe uses defense mechanisms, such as denial, projection, and reaction formation, to cope with her anxiety. The analysis emphasizes that one's problems in the past can result in a certain kind of anxiety in their current life, which determines the way they interact with others.
