Abstract

This thesis discusses the self-actualization and the hero’s journey theory in V. E. Schwab’s The Invisible Life of Addie Larue. I aim to reveal whether or not the main character of the novel, Addie LaRue, succeeds to achieve her self-actualization and can be called a heroin. Firstly, I apply the hierarchy of need theory by Abraham Maslow to analyze Addie’s self-actualization process. Secondly, I apply the theory of hero’s journey by Joseph Campbell and Addie Larue is going through three out of five steps in Departure, namely the Call to Adventure, Crossing the First Threshold, and The Belly of The Whale; two out of six steps in Initiation, namely Meeting with The Goddess and The Ultimate Boon; and two out of six steps in Return, namely Master of the Two Worlds and Freedom to Live. The analysis shows that Addie LaRue has difficulties in fulfilling the basic needs in her life. It is due to her being abandoned by her family. However, she is evidently successful to survive despite all the shortcomings of her needs. Thus, from hero journey’s perspective, she can be called a hero.
