Abstract

This thesis discussed about feminist struggle experienced by some characters in novel Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This thesis explores the intricate portrayal of marriage, sexual desire, and cultural identity in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus. Through a critical analysis of the novel, it examines how Adichie uses these themes to illuminate the complex intersections between personal autonomy and societal expectations within a Nigerian context. Marriage is depicted not only as a traditional institution but also as a site of control and repression, particularly through the character of Eugene Achike and his authoritarian relationship with his family. This novel not only talks about marriage, but Adichie also depicts the sexual desire of children, where they do not have time to be able to know and explore themselves in aspects of sexuality because their entire life is regulated and controlled by his father. Cultural identity is presented as a fluid construct influenced by colonial legacies and modern aspirations, as reflected in the characters' struggles to reconcile their traditional heritage with contemporary influences. Finally, I would to bring up how Adichie depicts marriage, sexual desire and cultural identity regarding self-awareness and self-expression trough the feminist and cultural identity approach. This research applies feminist theory pioneered by Bell Hook to produce an analysis of inequality and resistance to women depicted through marriage and sexual desire in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Purple Hibiscus. To support this research, I use the qualitative method, library research, and close reading method. As the result, this research show how the characters tried to breaking the rules that had been made by culture and religion to gain freedom
