Abstract

ABSTRACT This thesis compares American and Indonesian female authors’ novels. Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Saman by Ayu Utami. The focus of the research is how the authors represent the changes of male and female stereotypes base on Cixous’ Patriarchal Binary Thought. This thesis also analyzes identity, sexuality and roles in gender diversity in these novels. This research uses the approach of feminism; gynocriticism and Cixous’ patriarchal binary thought. The findings show that these female authors change traditional male’s positive values to female characters. Gilman reflects radical feminism to eliminate patriarchal values and Utami reflects liberal feminism to create an equal opportunism for men and women domestically and publically. Keywords: Identity, Sexuality, Gender Roles, Liberal Feminism, Radical Feminism
