Abstract

Harry Potter’s transformation from a series of books to eventually becoming eight films and theme parks indicates the opportunity for a literary work to become a global influence, including in tourism. This study investigates The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Orlando, as an adaptation of Harry Potter novels and films to find out the alterations and their implications. Employing Linda Hutcheon’s adaptation theory and medium specificity, this research focuses on characters, settings, and the theme park’s attractions. This study utilizes descriptive qualitative research with library research data collection method. There are two findings. First, it reveals a shift from a character-centric focus in the novels to a setting-centric approach in the park. Hogwarts Castle, Hogsmeade village, and Diagon Alley come to life, while characters exist in holograms, screens, and animatronics, just to increase the immersion of the attractions and settings. Second, the park introduces medium specificity, which can be seen from the park system and interactive attractions, all of which are absent in the novels as a telling medium. The Wizarding World successfully adapts a literary work into a theme park, using novels as storyline references and films as visual references to create unique attractions and experiences, allowing visitors to have a literary experience of becoming a character inside the wizarding world.
